In Memoriam

In Memoriam

In memory of Pamela Howland

In 2019 gifted Steinway artist Pamela Howland visited the School of Arts and Humanities and performed a memorable concert, Chopin Meets the Beatles: Songs of Love, Loss and Longing, and a lecture on Music and the Movies: The Soundtrack of American Film.

Pam earned her Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music and taught for many years in Wake Forest University's Music Department. She was a Chopin specialist, who recorded 19 albums including the music of Chopin, Debussy, Ravel, and more. In 2017-2018 she was Fulbright Scholar to Poland and recently recorded Three Scenes from Poland, her first original music.

She was collaborating with RHOME and developing a project on Portuguese Saudade and the American Blues: Musical Expressions of Longing and Belonging. Pam believed in music’s exceptional power to evoke memories and emotions and was committed to discovering and offering insights into how our commonalities far exceed our differences; how cultural comparisons can breed empathy and, specifically, how music can unite us.

We are sad to have been deprived of Pam’s talent, knowledge and gracious generosity and would like to share with colleagues, students and other scholars the recorded videos of Pam’s concert and performed lecture.
