Bio note
Luisa Ferreira (b. 1961) is an independent photographer who lives and works in Lisbon. She began to photograph professionally in the mid 1980s. She was a photographer for Público newspaper (1989-1996) and a correspondent of the Associated Press news agency (1986-1998). She approaches her subject matter with enchantment and a sense of the documentary, capturing sensitive and singular moments and creating accurate images that are, nonetheless, open to the imagination. She received the 2019 Authors Award, Visual Arts, Best Work of Photography for her branco [white] exhibition, at Galeria Monumental (2018). Her most recent publication stems from the commissioned assignment “Science Heals: knowledge in the fight against COVID-19 in Portugal (March-June 2020)” [“A Ciência Cura: o conhecimento no combate ao COVID-19 em Portugal (março-junho 2020]. She has a master’s degree in Design and Visual Culture – Photography Studies, from the Higher School of Design [ Escola Superior de Design] (IADE) and is now working towards her PhD at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University, Lisbon [Universidade NOVA de Lisboa].
The city and its inhabitants are central themes in her socially and politically engaged work.
